Man, 24, pleads guilty to Coquitlam manslaughter

A 24-year-old man, Jeffrey Stevens, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Coquitlam on December 10, 2025, for his involvement in the stabbing death of 66-year-old Terry Miller in February 2022, a plea which is a significant step in the court process. The incident occurred on February 10, 2022, in the area of 228 Schoolhouse Street, which is a strip mall. First responders found Miller with stab wounds and transported him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Miller died from his injuries twelve days later, on February 22, 2022.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took lead of the investigation, working with the Coquitlam RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service. On January 20, 2023, nearly a year after the stabbing, investigators arrested Stevens in Surrey. He was initially charged with second-degree murder. In addition to the charge related to Miller's death, Stevens was also charged with aggravated assault concerning a second victim who survived the incident. That second victim was reportedly Miller's eldest son. Investigators believed the stabbing was a targeted event and not related to gang conflict in the Lower Mainland.

A second suspect, Chalice Slavik, who was 24 at the time of his arrest in January 2023, was also charged with manslaughter in connection with Miller's death. Stevens, who was 21 at the time of the offence, is scheduled to be sentenced on March 12, 2026. A representative for the homicide investigation team stated that their thoughts are with the family of Mr. Miller and others who were impacted by the event as they await the sentencing.
