BC elector groups line up candidates for 2026 civic vote.
Preparations are underway for the local elections in October 2026. These elections will be held in British Columbia's New Westminster, Burnaby, and Tri-Cities regions. Both new and returning groups will compete for positions on city councils and school boards.
In New Westminster, candidates are expected from Community First and the New Westminster Progressives for city council and the school board. In the 2022 election, Community First secured the mayor's office and a majority on council. The New Westminster Progressives won two council seats. ParentsVoice British Columbia is also anticipated to have candidates for school board positions.
Several groups are registered for the election in Burnaby. The Burnaby Citizens Association held a council majority after the 2022 election, where Mayor Mike Hurley was chosen without opposition. Other groups expected to present candidates include the Burnaby Green Party, the Conservative Party of Burnaby, and ONE Burnaby. The Burnaby Green Party has focused on affordable housing and climate action. ONE Burnaby has centered its platform on affordability, public safety, and accountability at city hall. The Burnaby Citizens Association, Burnaby Green Party, Conservative Party, and ParentsVoice British Columbia also intend to have candidates for school board positions.
New political organizations are emerging in the Tri-Cities. The Conservative Electors Association is registered to run candidates in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam. This group, led by individuals including former government minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay, plans to campaign on lower taxes and safer streets in many areas across the province. The group's president has stated its independence from other conservative parties. In Port Moody, a new group called Port Moody Voice has launched, including current city council member Haven Lurbiecki. ParentsVoice British Columbia is also expected to have candidates for the School District 43 board.
